Dear Reader,
Before you explore this site, you should know that in ancient Greek mythology, there were countless gods and goddesses. However there were also part god, part human beings that tended to have incredible strength thanks to the god part in them. In the real world of the ancient Greeks, this led to men trying to prove their strength because they idolized these gods and super humans. This led to the creation of the Olympics that you will read about. I would suggest that the site be explored in the order of how the pages appear on the navigation bar. Reading about the ancient and modern games will give you an insight into the rest of the site and help you on trivia.
I chose this topic because it is hard for me to write about topics that I am not interested in. The Olympic Games interest me in many ways, such as the idea that they attract so many countries. In a world full of bad things happening everyday worldwide, it is amazing that most countries can set aside their differences and compete in these games. Also, the idea that the Games have been around for a while in modern day, and that they derived from ancient versions of these games is an interesting idea. However there was a large gap between the ancient and modern games therefore I thought it would be interesting to research not only how they
compare, but also how the modern games started up again after such a long time.
Before I started researching the ancient and modern Olympic Games, I mainly only knew about the modern-day Olympics. By modern-day, I mean within the past decade or so. I did know that the Games came from ancient days and the Greeks, but past that I did not know much more about this topic. Therefore I had a lot to learn while researching my topic.
I used many resources throughout my research. While all of my resources are online, I made sure that the information I found was credible. I did this by double checking the information I got. If I could find the same information on another site that I thought to be
credible, then I used the original site and the information. I also found many pictures online, and when you need to make a webpage, pictures on the internet are easy to add. I believe that the internet has a lot of good information with a lot of variety, however you must make sure the information you find is correct.
Throughout my research, I learned much more about the Olympic Games then I thought I would learn. I learned that the United States has not participated in every Modern Olympic Game, and that the Ancient Games were not only a big deal, but the Games occurred annually for centuries. In addition I learned something as simple as what the 5 colors of the 5 Olympic Rings stand for.
Now the question is, how will this change me? As simple as it sounds, it is true that I will have a greater understanding of the Olympic Games when I watch the Winter Games in 2014. I know now what went into the beginning of the games. Even more importantly, more than before, I realize the significance of this event. The Olympic Games are nothing short of a miracle. Countries put aside their differences for two weeks every two years and compete in something as simple as sports.
Sincerely,
Abigail Hancock
